Dear IMPACT subscriber,
IMPACT (Independent Melbourne Partners Against Congested Transport) is an alliance formed by the RACV, Bicycle Victoria, Bus Association Victoria, Yarra Trams, Public Transport Users Association (PTUA), Victorian Transport Association and the Victorian Taxi Association. Our vision is for a more liveable city. The Government's Keeping Melbourne Moving plan is a start but more needs to be done. The Victorian Government has just released the Victorian Transport Plan. This plan includes a number of initiatives that address current capacity issues on the public transport network in addition to further measures to tackle the increasing problem of traffic congestion. As members of IMPACT, we look forward to reviewing this plan and commenting on the initiatives. This plan is expected to help set the agenda for IMPACT for the next 12 months. The recent election of the new Lord Mayor of Melbourne and his proposal to open up Swanston Street to traffic has created much discussion among members of IMPACT. This issue will be one that we intend to pursue should it gain momentum. So far 70% of clearways have had the new standardised times implemented (6.30am to 10am) and it is expected that all AM peak clearways will be implemented by the end of February 2009. So far, most of the extended clearways have been implemented on roads where trams do not operate. Thank you for registering your support for IMPACT. We will again be in contact in the New Year with further updates on how we can make a difference to improving Melbourne's congested roads and encouraging more sustainable practices in people moving. We wish you the very best for the festive season. Safe Travels The IMPACT team. |
